Arrested suspect steals Alberta Sheriff patrol cruiser northwest of Edmonton

An Alberta Sheriff patrol vehicle is back in the hands of the authorities after it was stolen by an arrested suspect on Tuesday night.

Alberta RCMP say they were notified about the theft around 10:12 p.m. It’s not clear where and how the cruiser was stolen.

Police say the car was located travelling near Gunn, Alta., northwest of Edmonton, and Mounties pursued it.

RCMP deployed tire spikes but the cruiser continued to drive on flat tires, according to police.

“When the accused attempted to drive into Spruce Grove, Alta., RCMP forcefully pushed the vehicle into the ditch,” police said in a news release. “The accused successfully drove out of the ditch and entered oncoming traffic.

“An Alberta RCMP cruiser made contact with the accused’s vehicle and disabled it.”

A 42-year-old from Spruce Grove was taken to hospital. They are facing a wide range of charges, including flight from police; escaping lawful custody; theft of a motor vehicle; and assaulting a peace officer with a weapon.
