Edmonton ending extreme cold response

The City of Edmonton will deactivate its extreme weather response on Monday at noon as temperatures are expected to improve early next week.

The response was activated Wednesday, after record-low temperatures prompted the city to expand overnight shuttle services and provide additional shelter options. The final night of the expanded west-route shuttle service will be the evening of Jan. 25, ending the morning of Jan. 26.

City officials say the early announcement gives residents time to adjust their plans for accessing shelters. While the extreme weather response ends, winter shelter shuttles along north and south routes, a 24/7 Hope Mission shuttle on the west route, and overnight shuttles from transit stations to shelters will continue operating until March 31. Public city facilities and libraries will also remain open during regular hours for anyone needing respite from the cold.

Officials remind the public to check on vulnerable individuals and call 911 in emergencies, or 211 and press 3 for 24/7 non-emergency support for shelter, intoxication, or mental health concerns. Route maps and updates on extreme weather services are available here.
