15 new peace officers coming to Edmonton Transit this month, with another 15 starting in July

Starting this month, 15 new transit peace officers will be deployed across Edmonton transit. Those in charge of the program says it increases perceptions of rider safety — but do Edmontonian's feel the same way?

Fifteen new transit peace officers are being deployed across the Edmonton Transit Service this month, as the city continues in its pledge to increase safety.

The new officers will patrol buses, LRT and transit stations. A second batch of 15 officers – for a total of 30 new officers in 2026 – will be deployed in July.

That will bring the total number of transit peace officers in Edmonton to 126.

City council voted to add the 30 transit peace officers in April 2025.

The extra peace officers effectively remove Commissionaires from stations across the ETS landscape that were known to have more disorder and crime.

Commissionaires didn’t have any enforcement authority; they could report incidents to peace officers and emergency services.

In contrast, transit peace officers can intervene in certain criminal incidents; have the authority to enforce municipal bylaws and provincial legislation; and can support police when required.
