Albertans could be in for higher grocery prices in the new year. The average family of four is expected to spend almost $1,000 more on food in 2026 compared to last year, according to Dalhousie University latest Canada Food Price Report.
Some Edmontonians say they’ve learned some tips to navigate the affordability crisis in the grocery aisles.
“(I’m) all about the deals. Have to be about the deals ’cause… how else are you gonna survive?” said one shopper.
” I’m very lucky cause I have a Mrs. that likes to keep track of all the prices everywhere,” said another who goes where the deals are.
“I do look for sales, but if I want it, I get it,” said another Edmontonian.
A voluntary grocery code of conduct took effect as of Jan. 1, in an effort to make prices more transparent, fair and predictable.
So far, Canada’s five largest grocers including Loblaws, Walmart Canada and Costco Canada having signed on to the code.
However, opinions are mixed on whether or not prices will go down anytime soon.
