An Edmonton couple is looking for a fresh start in the new year after a fire on Christmas day destroyed their home in the Keswick neighbourhood.
The couple says they’re thankful to the community for an outpouring of support and were thinking of others who face similar tragedy.
“We have moments where we just can’t believe it,” said Robyn Wispinski.
“We’re upset but at the end of the day, fires impact so many families throughout the year – and even though this happened to us on Christmas day – so many families go through this.”
Wispinski and her partner Cameron Stav – both musicians – were performing at a Christmas day charity gig outside the city when they got the call from a neighbour.
“We packed up, and it was all a blur really,” Stav recalls.
“We just threw everything in our cases, all our gear and stuff. When we got here, they were on the tail end of putting it out — so we saw about 30-40 firefighters.”

Edmonton Fire Rescue Services (EFRS) told CityNews that they got the call around 12:40 pm Christmas day — with the fire declared out two hours later.
According to EFRS, the fire started in the attic and it burned the roof entirely and turned the top floor of the house to ash. Some of the house also caved in.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. There were no injuries reported.
Stav and Wispinski say they will be moving into temporary housing next early next week. In the meantime, they’re thanking the community for an outpouring of support since the fire.
“It’s overwhelming in the beginning, I went to take a shower and then you get out of the shower and realize, ‘I don’t have clean clothes to put on.’ And a lot of reality just hits you like a ton of bricks. It’s hard to handle, but again, we’re so thankful for the support because we’re able to make it through and get by.”
The couple has launched an online fundraiser to help them get back on their feet.
