Two people are dead, and a man now faces murder charges after a dangerous person alert was issued for an area in and around Grande Prairie, northwest of Edmonton, on Saturday.
Mounties in Grande Prairie responded to reports of a shooting happening on a rural road in the area of Range Road 35 and Township Road 730 in Grande Prairie County, early Saturday.
Upon arrival, RCMP Cpl. Troy Savinkoff said emergency crews found the individuals dead along a rural road near the hamlet of La Glace, northwest of Grande Prairie. They were found dead next to their car, while the suspect was not on scene.
The two victims were identified on Sunday as David and Michelle Lagace, 54 and 44, respectively.
After they were found, Mounties warned the public in an alert that 42-year-old suspect Curtis Phillip Halladay was armed with multiple firearms and extremely dangerous, stating he shot at multiple people near Grande Prairie. The alert was made after determining he posed a “significant risk to the public.”
The alert, issued at around 11:30 a.m., covered a large area of northwestern Alberta, including the villages of Rycroft, Beaverlodge, and Saddle Hills County — all near the B.C. border.
Savinkoff confirmed to 660 NewsRadio on Saturday that the man was arrested after the alert was cancelled about two hours later at around 1 p.m. Halladay’s vehicle was found in a rural area near McLennan, Alta.
He didn’t explain the relationship between the couple and the suspect, but he did confirm they were known to each other.
Halladay now faces two counts of second-degree murder. He is expected to appear in court on Jan. 8, 2026.
RCMP Major Crime Unit’s Staff Sgt. Todd Wiebe said, on behalf of Mounties, “Our thoughts go out to the family and friends of the victims.”
