RCMP in Brooks are investigating several hate-motivated crimes in the city, including white supremacist and anti-immigrant graffiti.

So far, police say there have been nine instances of hateful spray painting on city-owned infrastructure.

The earliest incident was on Oct. 1, and the most recent report was from Nov. 26.

RCMP say the areas hit were Uplands, the median of Cassels Road, the bathroom at Lake Stafford Park, the bathroom at Duke of Sutherland Park and on the back of a street sign on Sutherland Drive.

The City of Brooks has also reported that stickers and decals reporting the ‘White Lives Matter’ movement are being placed around the city, usually on traffic signs.

The stickers have prompted public complaints. RCMP add that it’s an additional cost to the city to remove them.

“These acts target individuals and communities, and they have no place in our city,” they add. “We take every report seriously, and our officers will conduct thorough investigations to ensure accountability and support those affected.”

Police are encouraging anyone who witnesses or experiences a hate-motivated crime to report it.

Tips can be made to the local RCMP detachment at 403-794-4400 or anonymously through CrimeStoppers.
