Edmonton police warn about man who allegedly harasses women he meets on dating sites

Edmonton police have issued warrants for a 36-year-old man who they say has been known to harass and threaten women he meets on dating and escort sites.

The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says in one such instance, the man began communicating with a woman on Tinder in 2022.

“The pair exchanged phone numbers, after which he began harassing and berating her,” Edmonton police said in a news release. “When she blocked his number, he reportedly used several different phone numbers to continue the harassment.”

Authorities say the alleged harassment stopped before resuming this year after the man found the victim on an escort site.

“The accused reportedly arranged a date with the woman using a fake name and photo to avoid being recognized, and when the woman refused to continue the date, he progressed to uttering threats,” the news release reads.

On Nov. 14, EPS obtained warrants for the man for uttering threats to cause bodily harm and criminal harassment. Police say the accused is bound by two release orders for uttering threats and assault in similar investigations out of Calgary and B.C.

Investigators believe there may be other complainants against the accused.

Police say Matthew Edward Williams, 36, also goes by the name Matthew Galpin and is known to use fake names and photos.
