National Picture

Across Canada, the Toyota RAV4 has emerged as the most stolen vehicle in 2024. More than 2,000 RAV4s were reported stolen during that year, with Quebec and Ontario seeing the highest numbers.

Investigators say newer SUVs with keyless entry systems are especially vulnerable to organized crime groups, which target them for resale both domestically and overseas.

Equité Association, a not-for-profit group focused on insurance fraud and theft prevention, warns that criminal networks are adapting quickly to exploit security gaps. The RAV4’s popularity worldwide makes it a lucrative target, with stolen vehicles often shipped abroad to meet demand.

For Alberta drivers, the report underscores the risk facing pickup owners. Authorities recommend anti-theft devices and secure parking as theft rates continue to climb.
