After months of delays, the beloved Canadian department store Zellers is finally back and bringing the hype and nostalgia to Edmonton’s Londonderry Mall.
Long lines up on Thursday of long-time Zellers shoppers wanting to be the first to re-experience the old store.
“I can’t believe that it’s finally open. I’ve been awake since 4:00 a.m. waiting to come here, and I was at the mall at 9:15 waiting for the store to open,” said Jeannine Daniel, a long-time Zellers shopper.
Daniel was there in August when the Zellers signs went up. She has been waiting ever since for a chance to see inside.

Others were glad to see the Canadian chain back, remembering the department store from their fondest memories.
“It makes me feel very happy that I can walk to the mall, so I have easy access … I used to work for Zellers in Lethbridge many years ago, and it was a great store and a great group of people to work with, and I’m so happy they’re back,” said Elaine Laurin, who worked at a Zellers in Lethbridge in the 80s.
The franchise has had multiple comeback attempts after Target Canada took over Zellers stores between 2011 and 2013.
Previously owned by the Hudson’s Bay Company, the trademark is now owned by the company that owns Fairweather and International Clothiers.

While the department store still offers the typical clothing, home essentials, and decor. Some shoppers told CityNews the new Zellers does not feel or look the same compared to the original.
“I don’t know if this has it, but the Zellers cafe restaurant. It was really good and something that our mom used to take us to all the time, all the bargains we had, but maybe the Zellers will have that eventually,” said Cynthia Schlueter, a long-time Zellers shopper.
Charlene McCarthy, a Zellers shopper, added, “I was so disappointed when I heard that they didn’t have toys. They were going to probably still have the clothes, but not toys, so that was a little sad to hear that.”

Londonderry Mall is hoping this first Canadian location will attract more people, especially in the holiday season.
“We believe that Zellers will have a positive impact on our foot traffic through the shopping center. It is a traffic driver and the shopping destination on its own,” said Claire Kolmatycki, the general manager of Londonderry Mall.
