Edmonton man accused of spray-painting seniors’ facility with hateful messages

Canada’s national security police arrested a 20-year-old Edmonton man last month after they allege a seniors’ facility was spray-painted with hateful rhetoric.

The RCMP Federal Policing Northwest Region’s Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET) says the man was arrested and charged Sept. 10.

It’s unclear which seniors’ facility was allegedly vandalized, when it happened, or what was the content of the messages.

The RCMP says it launched an investigation in October 2024 with the Edmonton Police Service.

“Due to the nature of the crime investigation, collaboration with National Security and Edmonton Police Services was in the best interest of public safety in this particular case,” a communications officer for INSET told CityNews via email.

Investigators say they identified the accused based on an online post allegedly claiming responsibility for the crime.

Malachi Briston has been charged with mischief related to religious property and uttering threats. He appeared in court Wednesday; his next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 4. None of the allegations have been tested in court.

Alberta’s Court and Justice Services says Briston has previous charges to his name, but those cannot be shared as they date back to when he was a minor.
