Edmonton police say they were able to issue 30 tickets and execute a warrant at a recent street racing meetup.
EPS says they became aware of a gathering near 129 Avenue and 170 Street during the evening of Sept. 21.
It was believed that over 100 vehicles were gathering for the purpose of street racing.
EPS has also released drone video footage from where cars were meeting.
Due to this, officers set up check stops in the area and were able to intercept each vehicle. During the stops, police were able to issue 30 tickets for various vehicle equipment violations and stunting.
“In a year where traffic fatalities are set to eclipse the last two years, and extreme speeding and street racing are an ongoing problem on our streets, this behaviour is unacceptable,” says Cst. Peter Lafleur, with EPS Northwest Branch.
“The EPS will continue to target extreme speeding, racing, and stunting, and will issue tickets where applicable. We have a zero tolerance policy for street racing.”
Police say as of Sept. 23, Edmonton has seen 25 fatal collisions and 90 serious injury collisions. In all of 2024, the city had 26 fatal collisions and 129 serious injury collisions.
