The City of Edmonton’s annual yard waste collection will start shortly.
The City announced Tuesday that households will be assigned two yard waste collection days between September 29 and November 24.
On these days, residents will be asked to put out yard waste, such as leaves, in see-through plastic bags or double-ply paper bags.
Despite this, the City says elm wood can no longer be mixed with yard waste or placed in carts.
This comes as Dutch elm disease was discovered in Edmonton last year, and the city is looking at limiting its spread.
Those who have elms on their property are reminded that the annual pruning ban remains in effect until Oct. 1. After that, prune the trees to keep them healthy by removing any dead or dying branches and disposing of those branches immediately by burning them or taking them to the Edmonton Waste Management Centre at 250 Aurum Road.
Anyone who does this is asked to inform the scale operator that they have elm wood, so it can be handled properly. Additionally, elm wood is not accepted at Eco Stations.
It is recommended that the bags be easy enough to lift with one arm, and the City notes that there is no limit on the number of bags that can be put out.
On top of curbside pick up, yard waste can also be taken to Eco Stations and the Edmonton Waste Management Centre for free.
Residents who want to find out when their collection dates are can do so by downloading the WasteWise app or visiting the City of Edmonton website.
