After 15 years, Lucy Lu is hanging up her apron and hoping someone will carry on the 50-year legacy of the iconic Hazeldean Bakery in Edmonton.
“Long time in the business is a little tiring, and I want to relax, and also I’m going to move,” said Lu. “I want to move to B.C. because my daughter is there, and I want to stay with my family.”
“Customer’s laughter is my product,” said Lu. “I also think we also have a very good service, so I’m very proud of that.”
Long-time customers are sad to hear about Lu’s retirement, but glad she may soon get the break she deserves.
“The bread is epic,” said Aline Desrosiers. “The cookies are great, like there are too many to name.”
“It’s kind of sad because you know it’s a staple in the area, so hopefully whoever takes over the bakery will continue on with your tradition,” said Gail Dowler, a customer.
“We will miss her greatly lately, but I know it’s time,” said Ed McTavish. “She’s done so much work. It’s time to relax and enjoy life.”
The bakery has been listed for sale for less than a week, Lu says, and not only will she leave the equipment, but also the staff and recipes for the next owner.
“I’m hoping somebody does buy it and doesn’t close, cuz it has been a landmark of the Hazeldean shopping centre and Hazeldine community for years,” said McTavish.
Despite looking forward to a new chapter, Lu says she will miss making memories in this space.
“I like this place, it’s like home,” said Lu. “I stayed at my home in a hotel, but here is my real home. Maybe someday, if I am moving, I will come back.”
