Fire at south Edmonton strip mall damages business, forces shops to close

Some shops in a Central Edmonton plaza, at 99 Street and 43 Avenue, are forced to close temporarily after a fire broke out early Thursday morning.

Edmonton firefighters responded to an early morning fire at a strip mall in south Edmonton Thursday.

Crews arrived to the blaze at Chateau Lighting at 99 Street and 43 Avenue around 4:20 a.m.

EFRS says while the fire was brought under control at 5:56 a.m., crews were still working on scene to put out the fire as of 9:15 a.m.

Shattered windows, charred siding, and walls burned away could be seen at the location. Products inside the business were also damaged.

EFRS says no injuries were reported.

Damage from the smoke and water reached into the next door sewing shop.

“We basically suffered a lot of smoke and water damage at our business, at Johnson’s Sewing Centre,” said Brad St. Pierre. “So unfortunately we’re temporarily closed now until we can get things put back together.”

St. Pierre says his security company called him, and firefighters were onsite within four minutes.

“We have a lot of fabric in our business, and that fabric just absorbs the smoke smell, so wait for the (insurance) adjuster to come by and see what they say about it,” St. Pierre said.

Fire investigators are working to determine what caused the blaze.
