The Alberta government is investing $895,000 through its sports event grant program to support a series of national and international sporting events coming to the province over the next four months.
The province says the funds will support organizations in hosting the competitions, with money being used for facility rentals, venue enhancements, and promotional and marketing campaigns.
Thousands of athletes from across Canada and around the world are descending on Edmonton, St. Albert, Calgary and Camrose between August and December for four national championships and five major international sporting events.
Three of those events – the men’s U21 Volleyball Pan American Cup in Calgary, the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Calgary, and the National Half Marathon Championships in Edmonton – have recently taken place.
The six remaining events are:
- Pan American Canoe Championships (Aug. 22-24 in Edmonton)
- Canadian Cross Triathlon Championships (Aug. 23-24 in Edmonton)
- Canadian BMX Championships (Aug 23-24 in St. Albert)
- ISU World Cup Speed Skating (Nov. 21-23 in Calgary)
- Viking Cup (Dec. 28 to Jan. 4 in Camrose)
- FIS Snowboard and Freeski Halfpipe World Cup (Dec. 31 to Jan. 3 in Calgary)
“This upcoming lineup of events highlights Alberta’s commitment to sport excellence, supports our local athletes, inspires kids to get active and helps local businesses thrive,” said Alberta Minister of Tourism and Sport Andrew Boitchenko.
Each event is eligible to receive up to $250,000 in provincial support.
The province says each investment leads to even more money injected into the respective cities’ economies, with participants and spectators “supporting businesses in the region with dining, shopping, entertainment and accommodation bookings.”
