Man dead after fiery Anthony Henday crash; woman driving wrong way believed cause

Edmonton police say a 23-year-old man is dead following a fiery single-vehicle collision believed to be caused by a driver going the wrong way early Saturday.

Around 1:30 a.m. on Aug. 9, officers responded to a report of a collision along Anthony Henday Drive near the Highway 14 overpass.

It is believed that a Chevrolet Cruze hit a light standard and caught fire.

A bystander who witnessed the collision pulled the driver from the vehicle and attempted life-saving measures; however, the driver died from his injuries at the scene.

Reports indicated that a Chevrolet Cavalier was seen driving north in the southbound lanes. Police believe this is the cause of the collision.

The Cavalier was later found by Strathcona County RCMP still driving north in the southbound lanes on Anthony Henday Drive just south of the Sherwood Park Freeway.

Police were able to stop the vehicle and took the driver–a 23-year-old woman–into custody. She is facing charges of dangerous driving causing death and impaired driving.

An investigation is ongoing, and police are asking if anyone has any information regarding the collision to contact investigators at 780-423-4567.
