First Valley Line West LRT vehicle arrives in Edmonton

It’s being described as a major milestone for Edmonton’s Valley Line West LRT.

The first light rail vehicle for the LRT recently arrived in the city – making its way from South Korea to Alberta’s capital via the Port of Tacoma in Washington.

The vehicle left Hyundai Rotem Company’s facility in Changwon, South Korea – in two separate sections – on July 1. It travelled across the Pacific Ocean on a roll-on/roll-off ship and arrived in Washington on July 20.

The light rail vehicle – or LRV – then made its way to the Gerry Wright operations and maintenance facility in southeast Edmonton. The vehicle was then offloaded and will undergo final assembly.

“The arrival of the first LRV is more than just a milestone; it’s a sign of momentum for the Valley Line West. Watching this train roll into Edmonton is a proud moment for our team and for the city,” said Brian Latte, director of the Valley Line West for the City of Edmonton.

“This LRV is a part of where we’re headed as a city. As Edmonton grows towards two million people, Valley Line West will change how we move, how we build, and how we connect with one another.”

The plan is for Hyundai Rotem to supply 46 LRVs to Edmonton for the Valley Line West, with delivery continuing into 2027. Sixteen of those are at various stages of manufacturing in South Korea, the city said in a news release.

Testing of the new vehicles will take place on the Valley Line Southeast tracks “at a later time” and without impacting passenger service, the city says.

Construction on the Valley Line West LRT is slated for completion in 2028. The company responsible, Marigold Infrastructure Partners, says construction moved forward considerably in 2024 after slow years in 2022 and 2023.
