Edmonton’s Hawrelak Park on track to reopen to public this winter

The three-year rehabilitation of William Hawrelak Park remains “on time and on budget,” with reopening still scheduled for this winter.

That’s the latest from the City of Edmonton, which says the actual construction portion of the rehabilitation project should be completed this fall.

Park operations will then begin preparing the space for “finishing touches,” such as installing picnic tables, benches, and signage, for the park to reopen to the public.

The city says the last few months saw “substantial progress” on the picnic shelters, Main Pavilion and the operations yard, including the Heritage Festival storage area.

“Work has continued within the facilities with most buildings now drywalled,” the City of Edmonton said in a statement. “Earlier this spring, remaining site work resumed including electrical, landscaping and paving. The playground equipment was also recently installed.”

This summer, the goal remains to complete the remaining landscaping and to refill Hawrelak Lake. The city says newly added grass, trees and shrubs need time to establish and develop roots before the park can reopen.

Hawrelak Park closed to the public in the spring of 2023.
