Retired Alberta RCMP officer faces charges after shooting man in face in 2019

Alberta’s police watchdog has charged a retired Mountie with aggravated assault six years after shooting a man in the face.

The incident happened on April 6, 2019, in Eckville, west of Red Deer, just after 8 a.m.

RCMP told the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) officers were tipped off about stolen oilfield property on the north side of the town.

While checking four vehicles parked behind a business strip, an officer–Geordie Erickson–found a man sleeping in a pickup truck that was stolen from Saskatoon nearly a week before.

The officer then called for backup and laid down a spike belt, but an altercation broke out between the man and himself, leading Erikcson to shoot the man in the cheek.

He was sent to hospital with serious injuries.

ASIRT, tasked to investigate police actions which lead to serious injury or death, says the evidence was deemed to meet the criteria for a criminal offence.

Erickson was charged on July 28. He was released and is expected to appear in court on Aug. 28 in the Red Deer Court of Justice.
