2 Canadian Armed Forces members stabbed in brawl in Alberta town southeast of Edmonton

Police say two Canadian Armed Forces members were stabbed at a home in a town southeast of Edmonton, near the Saskatchewan border, on Thursday.

Alberta RCMP tells CityNews the stabbing in Wainwright was “part of a larger protracted incident.” Police spokesperson Troy Savinkoff adds the victims did not know the suspect.

The two injured were treated in hospital in Wainwright, and one of them was later sent to Edmonton for more specialized care.

Armed Forces spokeswoman Lt.-Col. Lena Angell says three junior military members were involved in a brawl with a civilian. Both victims are expected to recover, according to police.

Angell adds several other military members saw the fight and the Forces will fully co-operate with the RCMP investigation.

“All CAF members are expected to uphold the highest standards of professionalism; any incident of misconduct (is) thoroughly investigated and addressed through appropriate administrative or disciplinary measures,” Angell said in an emailed statement.

A 23-year-old man has charges pending for assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. The allegations have not been tested in court.

Canadian Forces Base Wainwright, about 200 kilometres southeast of Edmonton, is one of the country’s busiest army bases. The CAF members were stationed there.
