Break-in and theft at an Edmonton mail service facility

The City of Edmonton is informing the public about a break-in and theft that occurred at a city facility after hours during the weekend of June 28. The incident may have compromised the privacy of some Edmontonians.

Officials say the theft was discovered on June 30 and estimates that up to 200 pieces of mail were stolen, along with other items.

This mail would have been dropped off at a city facility or sent locally to the City via Canada Post between June 24 and 27. The stolen mail may have included details such as names, addresses, contact information, family details and/or financial information.

Officials say they are focused on informing and supporting those who may have been impacted by this incident.

The City of Edmonton has relocated mail storage to a secure location.

An internal privacy investigation has been launched to determine the extent of the privacy breach and provide the public with appropriate notification. The City has also reported the incident to the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner and the provincial Minister of Technology and Innovation.

The investigation is ongoing. Officials are reaching out to potentially affected individuals.

Anyone who dropped off mail at a city facility – including recreation centres, attractions and the Edmonton Service Centre– or sent mail to the City locally via Canada Post between June 24 and 27, is encouraged to contact the city to confirm receipt of their mail.

Visit their website to confirm the appropriate contact. Alternatively, you can email mailservicesbreach@edmonton.ca or call 311.
