Sugared and Spiced, a popular bakery in Edmonton is now closed after multiple years of business. It’s gone without a goodbye or a social media post. Traces of the business online are not reachable including their Instagram page, and website.
CityNews reached out to the owners but did not hear back. In the past, CityNews has heard from this business about challenges post-pandemic and repaying relief loans.
A note on the door by the landlord says the lease was terminated due to unpaid rent.
Dylan Lynch runs a neighbouring mountaineering shop inside a basement and a regular customer. He doesn’t need a large amount of advertising to let people know where he is but says Sugared and Spiced is not the only business struggling.
“I wish I had a magic solution for them to help them, but I don’t,” said Lynch. “So, I’m just supporting them as much as I can.”
Other businesses nearby are still open, and Lynch hopes there’s no domino effect in an alley he still calls a part of Whyte ave.
“If you don’t want to see more of it, get down here and support the people who are running businesses in a really expensive area that’s hard to keep a business open in,” said Lynch.
