Vandalism spree in town east of Edmonton causes $1M in damage; courthouse closed

Police say more than $1 million in damage was done in a vandalism spree in a central Alberta town over the weekend.

RCMP in Vermilion, east of Edmonton, say a suspect was arrested after several windows were smashed at the provincial government building, courthouse, public-health building, and on six Alberta Sheriffs vehicles parked on site on Sunday.

Authorities say the town’s Children’s Rehab Service was also damaged – both outside and in.

And the drive-thru display screens at a McDonald’s fast-food restaurant were also damaged to the tune of around $50,000.

Police say they were alerted by two youths who “reported the incident and stayed on scene in order to give their witness statement.”

Alberta’s Justice Ministry says on social media that the courthouse is closed until further notice as a result of the vandalism.

Vermilion RCMP allege the same suspect was responsible for all the damage.

Steven Bodurka, 23, was charged with several counts of mischief and breaking and entering to commit mischief. He was scheduled to appear in court Tuesday.

The charges have not been tested in court.

Vermilion is about 195 kilometres east of Edmonton.
