Edmonton police share footage of suspect vehicle in fatal 2024 hit and run of 13-year-old cyclist

More than a year after Edmonton teen Adam (AJ) Edhi was killed in a hit-and-run in Mill Woods while riding his bicycle, police released a video of the suspected vehicle, hoping the footage will prompt witnesses -- or the driver -- to come forward.

A car driving through an empty southeast Edmonton street on an early morning in May 2024 is the suspect vehicle in the fatal hit and run of a 13-year-old cyclist, according to police.

The Edmonton Police Service shared a brief video clip of the vehicle – believed to be a blue 2017 Mazda 3 sedan – driving east on 34 Avenue at 3:50 a.m. on May 29, 2024.

Just 15 minutes later, officers were called to assist paramedics at 48 Street and 34 Avenue where a teenage boy was struck by a vehicle. Police say he was in medical distress and died of his injuries at the scene.

A damaged bicycle could still be seen on the roadway later that morning.

EPS investigators believe the vehicle sustained damage to its front end and driver’s side when it hit the boy in the eastbound lanes of 34 Avenue.

“As we continue to investigate this tragic loss of life, we are once again appealing to the public with video footage,” said A/Sgt. Chris Deslaurier with the Major Collision Investigation Section. “While we are aware that significant time has passed, we have remained committed to ensuring that this incident is investigated to its fullest extent.

“We are hopeful that a member of the public will come forward with additional information about this vehicle or its driver, so we can provide some form of resolution to this young man’s family.”

Deslaurier added, “I have no doubt in my mind that somebody in Edmonton knows something about this that just hasn’t come forward yet. And my ultimate goal is to have that person come forward and talk to me … Or it’s always possible that somebody has that change of conscience where they go, ‘You know what? This family is suffering still, they want the answers, and I have an answer, so I’m willing to share that.’”

A memorial to the young boy is still at the scene of the collision and serves as a reminder of his tragic death over a year later. The family still has no name or face to put to his killer, and their calls for justice are still going unanswered.

“Our grief is immeasurable,” said Ellen Metcalfe, Adam (AJ) Edhi’s grandmother on May 29.

“Every day is the same. Who did it? Why did they leave him on the road to die? Why didn’t they stop? Why didn’t they turn themselves in a few days later?”

Remembered as the vibrant, outgoing one in the family, a spitfire with a lot of energy by his family.

His grandmother recently called on the driver to turn themselves in and for any witnesses to speak up, praying for an arrest every day, so the family can start to heal.

“Everywhere you go, there is always a memory of AJ, but he’s no longer here … but this is tantamount to murder in my eyes. This is a murderer in my eyes. And somebody knows that.”

Police are urging anyone with information to contact the EPS at 780-423-4567 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
