RCMP issue warning regarding text scam involving photo radar tickets

By CityNews Staff

Alberta RCMP are issuing a warning to the public regarding a text scam involving speeding violation tickets.

Mounties in Strathcona County say they’ve received a report of a scam claiming that an individual’s photo radar ticket is still unpaid.

The text message comes with a link to pay the ticket, which is where the money is then fraudulently taken.

Mounties warn that the government and police organizations do not issue tickets via text messaging, and are urging anyone who gets the text message to not open the link.

“If you receive any suspicious text messages, do not reply and do not click any links. If you are unsure if a message or phone call is fraudulent, the RCMP encourages you to contact the person/business/organization to confirm,” said RCMP in a statement.

Anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a fraud, they are asked to contact Strathcona County RCMP at 780-467-7741 and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by calling 1-888-495-8501.
