3 motorcycle deaths this season prompts Edmonton police to share safety tips

Edmonton police are urging motorcyclists to be safe on the road against the backdrop of three deaths and multiple serious injuries so far this season.

The Edmonton Police Service says those fatalities and injuries are a “sobering reminder that even experienced riders can misjudge conditions.”

“A little extra caution can save lives,” said Sgt. Kerry Bates from the traffic safety unit in a news release.

Riders are urged to stay vigilant, ride defensively, and watch for seasonal hazards like sand, gravel, uneven pavement and potholes. They are also asked to wear proper gear like helmets, jackets, gloves and boots.

“As a motorcyclist, you need a heightened sense of awareness,” said Bates. “You have to be constantly on the lookout for other vehicles that might not see you. Scan the road, anticipate hazards, and practice slow-speed maneuvers and emergency stops whenever possible.”

Police are also asking drivers to pay close attention to motorcyclists on the road.

Statistics shared by police show collisions involving motorcyclists in Edmonton have led to more fatalities and injuries in recent years.

  • 2020: 2 fatal, 9 serious injury
  • 2021: 2 fatal, 10 serious injury
  • 2022: 1 fatal, 20 serious injury
  • 2023: 3 fatal, 21 serious injury
