A former homicide detective of the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) has been charged for unlawfully sharing confidential and investigative information.

Edmonton police said in a news release Tuesday that retired Staff Sergeant William (Bill) Clark released unauthorized and confidential investigative information to the news media and has been charged with breach of trust.

Bill Clark was a 44-year member and retired from the EPS on May 10 last year.

This investigation was conducted by the EPS Professional Standards Branch with oversight from the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT). It was subsequently reviewed by the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service in Calgary to determine if criminal charges were warranted. Prosecutors recommended that the former officer be charged with one count of breach of trust.
