Emergency Alert issued for Edmonton area due to thunderstorm, high winds

An Emergency Alert has been issued for the Edmonton area as a thunderstorm is producing extreme winds.

Alberta Emergency Alerts issued a warning at 7:24 p.m. for 20 areas surrounding and including Edmonton.

Environment Canada says the storm is producing winds of around 130 km/h, which has a high chance of creating flying debris.

Everyone in the alert area is advised to take shelter to protect themselves from debris and hail.

“If you hear roaring wind, see a funnel cloud, flying debris, or any threatening weather approaching, take shelter immediately,” said Environment Canada in a statement.

Areas under the alert are: Leduc, Camrose, Wetaskiwin, Tofield, Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park. Environment Canada meteorologists are tracking a very dangerous thunderstorm capable of producing destructive wind gusts.

The Oilers’ outdoor watch party in the Ice District has also been canceled due to the thunderstorm.
