Alberta’s premier gave cautious applause to Canada’s throne speech Tuesday, specifically to talk of fast tracking nation-building projects. First Nations Chiefs, meanwhile, were disappointed that Treaties were not mentioned.

Some muted applause Tuesday afternoon to Canada’s throne speech from Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.

In a statement, Smith praised a commitment to fast-track nation-building projects, but said Carney’s Liberals were short on details.

The Alberta government is demanding that Carney support a new oil pipeline to the northern B.C. coast, scrap an emissions cap, and kill net-zero electricity regulations.

Meanwhile, several chiefs travelled from Alberta to Ottawa to demand that Carney and King Charles honour treaty rights.

“We need to hold the Prime Minister Carney accountable. We need to keep his feet to the fire and at task. The king came out here to read out the throne speech. Very disappointed again, no word about treaty,” said Grand Chief Greg Desjarlais, Confederacy of Treaty Six First Nations.

Chiefs wanted to meet with the king to discuss concerns like resource revenue sharing and protecting the environment, but that did not happen.
