Edmonton police issue 695 traffic violations during latest ticket blitz

Speeding drivers were the main culprits in Edmonton police’s latest “Operation 24 Hours” ticket blitz.

The Edmonton Police Service says 195 traffic violations related to speed were issued May 15. That combines automated and manned enforcement.

There were also 83 red-light violation infractions; 152 non-hazardous infractions such as expired documents, tinted windows or noisy vehicles; 111 moving violations; five distracting driving violations; and six criminal code driving offences.

In total, 695 infractions were handed out that day.

“Given the changes in effect for automated traffic enforcement (ATE), these numbers are quite a bit lower than last year,” said Sgt. Kerry Bates in a news release. “Our officers continue to use our existing resources to conduct traffic enforcement and ATE is still in place around playgrounds and construction sites, as well as at select red lights.

“EPS will continue to work with our partners at the City of Edmonton to measure data to identify areas of need within the city.”
