Mole mobile skin cancer screenings available in Edmonton this weekend

This weekend, Edmontonians will have the chance to get screened for skin cancer and other skin-related issues around the city.

Melanoma Canada is sponsoring the Mole Mobile Tour, which offers access to screenings and education about skin cancer and other skin diseases.

“We try to provide education — but also actual examinations,” said Dr. Mariusz Sapijaszko, a dermatologist. “And if we find anything unusual, we try to follow up with those patients and maybe take small biopsies.”

Dermatologists told CityNews that some Edmontonians have already been diagnosed during the mobile screening event, which popped up in downtown Edmonton on Friday morning.

“I’ve been doing it since 11 o’clock, and we’ve already found skin cancers — actual skin cancers,” said Dr. Sapijaszko.

He added that melanoma is one of the deadliest yet most treatable forms of cancer if found early — something that could potentially save thousands of Canadian lives.

“In Canada, we have 11,000 diagnoses of melanoma per year — and that number is increasing,” said Dr. Sapijaszko. “It’s mostly caused by the sun, but sometimes by genetic conditions. The good news is it’s easily detectable — it’s right on the skin.”

The mobile screening unit will be available in downtown Edmonton, Sherwood Park, and Spruce Grove this weekend.
