Residents of Sturgeon County, north of Edmonton, are being told to evacuate their homes immediately due to a wildfire.
The Alberta Emergency Alert evacuation order was issued Tuesday at 2:33 p.m., when it was upgraded from “prepare to take action” to “take action now.”
The order is in effect for anyone living from Range Road 211 East to Range Road 203 and between Township Road 580 South to Township Road 573.
“Everyone in the impacted area must evacuate now,” the alert reads.
A reception centre has been set up at Pembina Place in Redwater, Alta.
“All residents in the evacuation area must report in person, to the reception centre,” Sturgeon County wrote in a Facebook post. “It is important to register in person in order to be eligible for future supports.”
The Sturgeon County wildfire, which has been burning since Saturday, was caused by an ATV catching fire in a remote part of the Redwater Provincial Recreation Area, officials have said. It is believed to have been due to an electrical or mechanical failure.
The wildfire was estimated at around 400 hectares as of Monday.
Alberta Wildfire says hot, dry, and windy conditions are an issue across the province. Alberta’s Forestry Ministry says for now, fire bans are up to individual communities, and it’s not time for a province-wide ban.
