Bike lane uses grew in Edmonton

    UP NEXT:

After almost 72 years, Ben’s Meat and Deli in West Edmonton along Stony Plain Road will move to a new larger location. While the business manages to thrive and survive, it still faces challenges, especially with the LRT Valley Line construction.

Just along Stony Plain Road in West Edmonton sits a local and iconic butcher shop, Ben’s Meats and Deli.

The shop has been thriving at this location for seven decades, and David Van Leeuwen, the owner of the butcher shop, has been passionate about running a family business.

“Ever since I was 4-years-old, I said I was going to be a butcher and own the store,” he explained.

Van Leeuwen bought the business in 1999, and since then, it has been a go-to place for customers. This location is not directly along the new LRT line, but it’s still hurting his business.

“You know, right now, 156th intersection is closed. It’s definitely harder for our customers to get here. It does affect our business somewhat.”

But soon the stress and hassle of dealing with the LRT construction will be gone as Ben’s Meats and Deli will soon have its brand new location just eight minutes away.

“We need space, we need parking, and we need more growing. So we need somewhere to do and somewhere to go,” Van Leeuwen explained.

The new place, which is along 184 Street and 105 Avenue, will be double the size of the current building, with new equipment and even a new gluten-free cafe.

“We’re hopefully just right now trying to get into the building and then growing from there.”

Ben’s Meat and Deli is looking to open the new location in early June.
