Advance voting turnout in Alberta surged this federal election, with a 26% increase compared to the previous election in 2021.

Elections Canada is out with more details on the record setting advance vote numbers released Tuesday and Alberta saw a similar increase to the nationwide numbers.

The agency says more than 815,000 early ballots were cast in Alberta from Friday through to Monday, which is just over 10 per cent of the overall total of nearly 7.3 million.

The provincial number is around a 26 per cent increase from the 646,000 advance votes cast in Alberta in the 2021 election, which is close to the national trend.

Elections Canada staff said on Good Friday alone, around two million people voted — setting a single-day record.

Interest in advance voting appears to be climbing among electors. In 2011, approximately 2.1 million ballots were cast. More than 3.6 million people voted in advance in the 2015 election, and four years later that figure rose to more than 4.8 million.

Election day is next Monday, Apr. 28, and polls will be open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Calgary. More information is available at elections.ca.
