Alberta RCMP launch non-emergency phone number

A new phone number launched by Alberta RCMP will streamline the reporting process, optimize investigations, and reduce unnecessary calls to 911, the police force says.
Alberta RCMP say the number, 310-RCMP, or 310-7267 will allow individuals across the province to make non-emergency police reports.
“310-RCMP was created to help eliminate confusion about which detachment someone should call if they experience a non-emergency that doesn’t require police attendance,” said director of the Operational Communications Centre, Chris Spence.
Municipal police forces in Calgary and Edmonton already have non-emergency lines for residents to report crimes; Calgary police’s non-emergency line is 403-266-1234, and Edmonton’s is 780-423-4567, or #377 can be dialed within city limits.
Police say the new number lets RCMP dispatchers decide if the call should go through to a station or to their own Call Back Unit (CBU).
CBUs respond and investigate files that don’t need officers to attend the scene, the RCMP says.
However, stations or specialized units would be called if they decide further investigation is needed.
Non-emergencies are considered incidents that don’t pose an immediate or potential threat to life or public safety, such as crimes that have already happened.
Minor motor vehicle collisions, break and enters that have already happened, scams where money or personal information was not given or stolen, lost property, property damage under $5,000 and theft under $5,000 are also examples of non-emergency reports.
Police say while these reports are important, they aren’t classified as an emergency.
The number is available to all Albertans within the province, and long-distance charges don’t apply.
Reports can also be made online through the Alberta RCMP app or via the Online Crime Reporting tab on the RCMP website.
