Physical restraint, confinement, isolation: Edmonton daycare issued probationary licence for ‘safety concerns’

A daycare in southwest Edmonton has been issued a probationary licence by the province due to safety concerns.

The Alberta government says Play ‘N’ Fun Day Care in Edmonton’s Chappelle neighbourhood was put on probation because “a number of non-compliances have gone unremedied by the provider.”

The term is set to expire July 9.

Data on the province’s Child Care Lookup tool indicates Play ‘N’ Fun has received 41 non-compliances since November 2023.

The latest was on March 26, when the province found the daycare non-compliant on staffing and general supervision, and use of physical restraint, confinement or isolation.

On March 5, the daycare was found non-compliant on staffing and general supervision — with an order to remedy set at April 8.

The daycare is required to notify parents of the probationary status, and the government says Child Care Licensing is “closely monitoring” the program.

“Through continued monitoring, further enforcement up to and including cancellation of a licence can occur if the level of risk continues or escalates,” the province said in a news release.

“If the licenced child-care program is unable to return to compliance during the probationary period, the suspended licence expires. Cancellation is the last resort with compliance being the goal.”
