Stony Plain Road, 124 Street intersection closing for LRT construction

By News Staff

Accelerated Valley Line West LRT construction will soon begin in the city, and starting April 22, Stony Plain Road and 124 Street intersection is closing completely for about eight weeks.

A construction notice released on Thursday by Marigold Infrastructure, the company responsible for work on the Valley Line West LRT expansion, states that the plan was approved by the City of Edmonton in February.

Marigold says construction will occur mostly during the daytime from Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Sunday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Traffic will be detoured around the intersection as parking bans will be put in place. Pedestrian access and access to local businesses will remain using detours.

The accelerated work will include the removal of sidewalks and roads to accommodate underground utility work, as well as the installation of tree pits, streetlights, traffic signals, track slab, and new curbs, sidewalks, and pavement.

“There will be noise associated with this work including that of heavy equipment and increased construction vehicle traffic in the area. Every effort will be made to reduce the impact to the public,” the release stated.

The release also stated that from April 14, 104 Avenue between 105 Street and 121 Street will be reduced to a single lane in either direction. Construction will also resume in the middle of 109 Street, north of 104 Avenue. Two lanes of north/south traffic will be maintained.

This work is expected to last 12 weeks. Lane reductions on 104 Avenue and 109 Street will continue for the remainder of the construction season (approximately November 30).
