Edmonton police are actively searching for a man who may have fallen into the North Saskatchewan River earlier this week while trying to rescue a dog.
Emergency crews were dispatched to Government House Park at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving a report about a dog alone on the ice in the river. Witnesses had reported seeing a man walking with the dog along the riverbank in that area.
A nearby truck, believed to belong to the missing man, was found empty.
The man has been identified as 31-year-old Seyem Gaim. Investigators suspect he may have fallen into the river while attempting to save the dog.
“We are hopeful that someone in the community or at Government House Park on Wednesday might have seen Mr. Gaim,” Const. Cassandra Grant said in a news release. “The return of winter conditions makes it particularly difficult to conduct searches throughout the city, so we urge everyone to stay vigilant around our roads and waterways until the warmer weather arrives.”
Gaim is described as having a bald head and a longer beard, standing 5’8″ and weighing approximately 150 pounds with a medium build. He was last seen wearing jeans, a grey and white jacket, a ball cap with a black rim, and dark shoes.
Anyone with information on Gaim’s whereabouts is asked to contact the Edmonton Police Service at 780-423-4567.
