ASIRT investigating man’s death in RCMP holding cell northeast of Edmonton

A man’s death while in police custody in St. Paul, northeast of Edmonton, last week is being investigated by Alberta’s police watchdog.

St. Paul RCMP say they arrested an intoxicated man on March 18 and placed him in a police holding cell around 9:30 p.m.

The next morning at 10:25 a.m., authorities say the man was found unresponsive in his cell. Life-saving measures were attempted, but he was declared dead shortly after.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the custody and care of the man.

St. Paul is about 200 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.
