Feds announce $187 million to help rebuild wildfire-ravaged Jasper

Ottawa announced Thursday a $187 million investment to repair and rebuild critical infrastructure in Jasper National Park after last summer’s devastating wildfire.

The money will support the reconstruction of roads, campgrounds, trails, and permanent staff housing. It will also help provide interim housing for staff and residents during rebuilding.

The funding will be provided to Parks Canada over two years.

Prime Minister Mark Carney was scheduled to make the announcement in Edmonton Thursday.

Last month the federal government announced $2 million for a “pop-up village” for 11 Jasper businesses and a storage workspace for construction materials inside the town’s small boundary.

Meanwhile the Alberta government pledged $3 million in support to help stabilize Jasper’s revenues, adding to the $3 million it has already provided to cover property tax losses. The town will be hit over the coming years by a major drop in revenue from local property taxes.

Alberta says it has provided Jasper with an assistance package of $178 million since the July 2024 blaze.
