Edmonton weather: Temperatures set to drop, city activates emergency response

By News Staff

It’s not quite the idles of March for Edmontonians yet, as freezing drizzle greeted people Thursday morning, ahead of the snowfall and upcoming colder days.

The City of Edmonton on Thursday activated its extreme weather response as morning temperatures are set to drop into the -15 C range Friday and near -20 C Saturday morning.

The response is expected to end Sunday, March 16 at 9 a.m.

The extreme weather response is activated when temperatures will be colder than -20 C with wind chill for at least three consecutive nights.

The city’s cold weather plan includes three bus routes that will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. every night to transport people to shelters with capacity.

Al Rashid Mosque will not be open during this extreme weather response as they are unable to provide shelter operations during Ramadan.

The Bissell Centre and Boyle Street Community Centre have day shelter spaces operational. Open City facilities such as libraries and recreation centres will be available during regular operations for anyone to take respite from the cold.
