Edmonton Public School superintendent retires after 30 years

The Edmonton Public School Board’s superintendent is retiring after 30 years of working with the division.

“Serving Edmonton Public Schools as Superintendent has been an immense pleasure and an honour,” Darrel Robertson said in a news release. “This decision, one I’ve been considering carefully for several months, comes with a mix of reflection and anticipation for the future.

“I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to have worked alongside such dedicated educators, staff, and families, all committed to the success of students.”

The announcement came Wednesday afternoon from EPSB Chair Julie Kusiek.

“On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to express our deepest gratitude for his dedicated service and unwavering commitment to our students,” said Kusiek.

“We are immensely grateful for Superintendent Robertson’s decades of service to the students and staff of Edmonton Public Schools. He has left an indelible mark on thousands of students, shaping their lives and inspiring them to achieve their dreams. His passion for education and his unwavering dedication to students and the calling of public education will be deeply missed.”

Robertson was the superintendent for the last 12 years of his 30-year career.

In that time, he was a key part in “fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, equity, integrity and innovation, always prioritizing the needs and well-being of students,” according to a statement from the EPSB.

The Board of Trustees will now look for a new superintendent, and says that more information about the recruitment process will be shared at a later time.
