Following the Ottawa Charge’s record-breaking 8-3 win over the Minnesota Frost on Thursday night, the team from the nation’s capital is gearing up for a sold-out battle of Ontario a little farther west than normal.
The Charge are set to take on provincial rivals the Toronto Sceptres in Edmonton as part of the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) neutral-ground Takeover Tour on Sunday.
The tour aims to highlight the PWHL and showcase the growing demand for women’s hockey.
With its stop at Edmonton’s Rogers Place, the league will try and determine if Edmonton is a viable location for an expansion franchise for women’s hockey, which would give Alberta its first professional team since 2019 when the Calgary Inferno were forced to fold along with the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.
And Edmontonians are doing a good job so far in supporting the league, as the game is sold out.
“The support from Edmonton and the Alberta hockey community leading up to our PWHL Takeover Tour game has been incredible. We’re thankful for the partnership with local leaders, who have been instrumental in bringing our world-class players to Edmonton, and we look forward to an unforgettable weekend, capped by our Feb. 16 game,” said Amy Scheer, executive vice-president of Business Operations with the PWHL.
Sunday’s game will also allow for some Alberta-born players to play in front of a hometown crowd. Those players include Ottawa Charge forward Danielle Serdachny, the second overall pick in the 2024 draft, along with her teammates: defender Stephanie Markowski from Edmonton and goaltender Emerance Maschmeyer from Bruderheim. Also featured in the game are Ottawa head coach Carla McLeod, from Spruce Grove, and Calgary’s Jessica Kondas, a defender for the Toronto Sceptres.
Sunday’s game between Ottawa and Toronto starts at 2 p.m.
