3 people believed to be connected to 2021 church fire in Morinville: RCMP

Alberta RCMP is releasing new information into their investigation regarding the arson of the St. Jean Baptiste Church in Morinville in 2021.

Mounties and fire crews responded to a fire at the church around 3:20 a.m. on June 30, 2021.

The fire came at a time when four other churches in British Columbia were also destroyed by suspicious fires. Mounties have not confirmed, but it was initially believed that the fires could have been set in retaliation to the discovery of unmarked graves at a former residential school site in Kamloops, B.C.

RCMP says over the course of their investigation, it is believed that three men might have been involved in the fire.

Two of the three men have been described as having long black hair, while the third was wearing a ball cap. Police say all three were also last seen leaving the area near the church in an early 90s GMC or Chevrolet pick-up truck that had a loud muffler.

“This fire destroyed a prominent landmark in the town of Morinville and we remain steadfast in solving this crime,” says Staff Sgt. Darcy McGunigal Detachment Commander Morinville RCMP. “Know that any tips received will be promptly investigated.”
