Homicide of Edmonton security guard prompts legislation review

By News Staff

The murder of a 20-year-old security guard in Edmonton has prompted the Alberta government to review safety legislation.

Arthur Green, from the office of the Deputy Premier and Public Safety and Emergency Services, told CityNews that the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) is investigating the tragic on-duty death of security guard Harshandeep Singh.

The findings of this investigation will help inform the government’s review of Alberta’s Security Services and Investigators Act and help shape recommendations for strengthening existing requirements to potentially mitigate similar tragedies in the future.

The Security Services and Investigators Act sets a minimum standard of training, accountability, and professionalism for the security industry and allows the government to license businesses and individuals.

Green said that Minister Mike Ellis looks forward to reviewing these recommendations.

Singh, who came to Canada a year-and-a-half ago on a student visa, was killed while patrolling the apartment building last week. He had only been on the job for three days.

Two 30-year-old suspects, Evan Rain and Judith Saulteaux, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder.
