Edmonton soccer star Alphonso Davies out for ‘the time being’ with muscle strain

Alphonso Davies is going to need some time off.

Bayern Munich announced Thursday the Canadian superstar suffered a muscle strain in his left hamstring during Wednesday’s 3-0 Champions League loss to Feyenoord. Davies will be “sidelined for the time being,” according to the club.

In the 45th minute, Davies hit the ground in pain and was replaced by Raphaël Guerreiro.

It’s inauspicious timing for Davies as he’s reportedly in the midst of contract talks with the Bundesliga club.

On Friday, The Athletic‘s David Ornstein reported that the crafty left-back and Bayern Munich are close to an agreement over a new contract.

Bayern’s talks with the 24-year-old have been going on for months, but Ornstein shared that only a small gap remains between the two parties’ expectations on a proposed four-year deal.

The timing is particularly pressing as the captain’s existing terms with the German giants are set to expire at the end of the 2024-25 season, with Premier League sides and Spanish heavyweights, including Real Madrid, carefully eyeing the situation.

If Davies does not renew terms with Bayern by the end of the campaign, he is free to talk to overseas clubs.

The Canadian talisman joined Bayern from the Vancouver Whitecaps in January 2019.

Internationally, Davies became the first Canadian to score at the FIFA World Cup in 2022 when he headed the ball home against Croatia on match day two.

The two-time Concacaf Player of the Year and four-time Canada Soccer Player of the Year has tallied 16 goals and 17 assists in 56 appearances for his country.
