No plea from accused in killing of security guard in downtown Edmonton

The two people accused in the fatal shooting of a security guard in downtown Edmonton last month have yet to enter a plea.

Lawyers for 30-year-olds Evan Rain and Judith Saulteaux told a judge Wednesday they need more time for preparations, including determining if the trial will be by judge or jury.

Rain and Saulteaux have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the Dec. 6 death of Harshandeep Singh.

Neither of the accused appeared through CCTV from the Edmonton Remand Centre on Wednesday. Both are expected back in court Feb. 5.

Singh, from Haryana state in northern India, came to Canada a year-and-a-half ago on a student visa and was enrolled at Edmonton’s NorQuest College.

The 20-year-old, employed by National Security Guard Protection Services, had only been on the job for three days.

Officers found Singh unresponsive inside the building on 106 Street and 107 Avenue. He later died in hospital.

An autopsy determined the cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the manner of death was homicide.
