Shootings in Edmonton down 47% in 2024

Edmonton police say shootings in the city were down by almost half in 2024, compared to the year before.

The Edmonton Police Service released end-of-year shooting statistics on Wednesday. They show there were 118 shootings in the Alberta capital in 2024, down significantly (47 per cent) from the 221 shootings in 2023.

Most months, except for February and October, saw a decrease in shootings from the previous year.

“It’s excellent that we saw an annual decrease in shootings in 2024,” Staff Sgt. Eric Stewart said. “As we look toward the new year, we remain committed to tackling gun crime, serious crimes and keeping firearms off of our streets.”

Last month, Edmonton police say there were seven shootings in the city compared to 17 in December 2023.

Of the seven reported shootings in December 2024, six are believed to be targeted and there were three deaths. In three of the seven shootings, there was potential for innocent bystanders to be harmed.

Police also seized 49 firearms in December, and 804 overall in 2024 compared to 892 firearms seized in 2023.
