40th annual STARS Lottery kicks off in Edmonton with dream home

It was an emotional moment for Dave Fiala introducing the 40th annual STARS home Lottery in Edmonton on Wednesday.

Fiala, was biking through the jasper back country in 2017 when he had a heart attack. To be able to get to the local hospital, he needed to be air lifted to Edmonton for specialized life saving surgery.

“The surgeon told me I was extremely lucky that the surgery finished with no time to spare,” said Fiala.

“He actually said he really doubted that I was going to make it when he started in.”

It’s stories like these, that highlight the impact of funds raised through the Alberta wide lottery for the donor supported air ambulance.

This years grand prize dream homes includes a million dollar property in Edmonton’s Griesbach neighbourhood, a home in Calgary and another in Lethbridge.

“What’s new is its our 40th anniversary, so that’s a big thing for us, a moment to look back and look forward,” said Dr. John Froh, incoming ceo & president of STARS air ambulance. “Our use of new technology; ultrasound, blood in the field, virtual care..”

Tickets for the lottery, with other prizes including trips or a Porsche, are on sale until March 27th, with prizes drawn shortly after.
